Although Trail Ridge Road may be closed in winter, the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park is still open, offering almost completely private tours of the national park.
There is a lot of snow on the west side of Rocky, creating a pristine wilderness and plenty of opportunities to watch wild animals. Although the park requires reservations during the summer, you can stop at any time this winter. A park pass is required, and a one-day pass costs $25 per car.
The 2020 Eastern Trouble and Cameron Peak Fire burned approximately 30,000 acres of land in the 265,769 acre national park. As the west side was hit hard by the fire, many closures still exist, so please check http://www.nps.gov/romo for the latest updates. As of October, the Green Mountain Trail and Tonahutu Trail on the west side have been closed.
Despite winter, weather and fire permits, the first 12 miles of U.S. Highway 34 through Rocky usually remain open. The driveway is a Narnia-like landscape, with snow-covered mountains, fields, and evergreen trees towering into the clouds.
Even in summer, the west side of Rocky is not as lively as the east entrance. As one side of the park is cut off in winter, you may only see a few cars at most.
The temperature may drop well below zero, so traveling by car is a great way to enjoy the scenery. If you insist on driving, make sure you still take some time to walk outside and appreciate the environment. Despite the cold weather, it is worth binding to appreciate the silence created in the snow-covered and isolated place.
Just because it is winter does not mean that wild animals are gone. Look for moose along the Colorado River, while elk and mule deer are most active at dusk and dawn in grassy areas. Stellar's jays, gray jays, Clark's nutcrackers and magpies are common in the park, even in winter.
A few feet of snow does not have to stop you from hiking. Just make sure to bring the right equipment. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are great ways to enjoy almost all western trails in Rocky. There are several trails on the burn scar that are open, but make sure to stay on the trails and avoid danger.
On the Trail Rentals and Never Summer Mountain Products in Great Lakes provide snowshoe rental services. Never Summer also offers cross-country skiing packages.
Be sure to wear multiple layers of clothing, wear boots tied to snowshoes, and bring a pair of waterproof pants or leggings to keep dry. Although the weather may be very cold, be sure to bring sunglasses and apply sunscreen. The snow constitutes a mirror and doubles the intensity of the winter sun.
Always pay attention to the weather, because it changes quickly and there will soon be a lot of snow on the mountain.
Adams Falls presents a spouting waterfall in spring and summer, turning into a symphony of flowing water, submerged by the ice and snow above. The Adams Falls Trail will open this winter, and if you continue along the trail through the falls, you will find an open plain with views of Craig Mountain.
Any trail along the river will make the snow crunch under the hiker's feet and the sound of water in the suppressed forest.
Some of Rocky’s overcrowded trails may not require snowshoeing, especially if a few days have passed since the last snowstorm. However, these trails can be slippery, and if you happen to encounter a "back pit" (when your feet are caught in the snow), you should return.
For hikers and snowshoe lovers, make sure not to travel on trails created by cross-country skiers. Doing so will bring danger to the next skier who takes this route.
Even if you only have a few hours, driving through the Rocky West in winter is a magical experience.
