If there are any signs of EM3 Ether, then the future of Metaverse will have very stylish VR glasses that don't look like a toaster on the face.

At first glance, you might not even notice that the person on it is wearing VR glasses. Debuted by VR startup EM3 Technology in Beijing, Ether currently has the thinnest and lightest mantle of VR headsets in the world. It looks like a pair of ordinary sunglasses and is attached to your face like a pair of sunglasses, but behind the seemingly ordinary veneer is a cutting-edge near-eye optical display system, which consists of two cameras located on the front of the glasses. drive.

Currently, Ether proves the slimness and lightness of VR headsets. Current headsets like Oculus Quest weigh far more than 2 kg (4.56 lbs), while Ether is much lighter, weighing only 37 grams (0.08 lbs)-roughly the same as ordinary Ray-Ban wayfarers. EM3 believes that this will allow more people to wear VR headsets for longer periods without fatigue due to heavy equipment.

The EM3 Ether prototype glass contains two microdisplays with a full-color resolution of 2560×2560 pixels. Currently, the glasses provide 80° FOV (field of view) for each eye, although EM3 claims that by using a larger format micro-display, FOV can be pushed to 100° without seeing any increase in thickness of the glasses—— The current measurement is a record 6.8 mm.

Given that the Ether prototypes are very slim (they are thinner than most mobile phones), it currently does not have the processing power to operate as a standalone VR headset and needs to be connected to external devices such as smartphones or PCs. Nevertheless, Ether sets the benchmark for future expectations, and EM3 announced that a retail model of VR glasses may be ready by the end of 2022. However, the impact of this technology is far-reaching, because a company like this Facebook has announced a hard move to Metaverse, and in the past few years there have been rumors that Apple is also developing its own stylish VR headset. For virtual reality and meta-universe, 2022 seems to be a very interesting year!
