A Hawaii-based coffee brand — one with a name that will make your kids giggle — is opening soon in Tustin.

Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii is slated to serve its first cup in early October at 17243 17th St. The shopping center is at the intersection of Carrol Way and 17th.

The Tustin franchise is owned and operated by the Borba family: Tom Sr. and his three sons, Eric, Brian and Tom Jr. The family with dairy farming roots has signed a multi-unit deal to open three locations in Orange County and the Inland Empire. The Tustin shop is their first.

Bad Ass Coffee was founded on the Big Island of Hawai’i in 1989. The name comes from the days when Hawaii’s coffee was harvested by donkeys, which, as legend has it, would bray loudly as they carried loads of beans down the mountains of the Big Island.

In addition to a Hawaiian cup of joe, Bad Ass also serves blended drinks, signature lattes, cold brews, teas, Hawaiian-inspired food and branded merchandise.
