At the beginning of September, I packed my bags (meticulously, might I add), boarded a plane, and headed out for the Super Bowl of the fashion industry: New York Fashion Week. While the main prerogative is to gather info on what to expect in future seasons (all collections shown were for spring and summer 2023), a close runner-up is observing all of the NYFW street style.

If there is ever a time to wear exactly what your heart desires, it’s NYFW. Nothing is too loud or too bold or too out-there—absolutely everything is fair game. When you look around, it’s impossible not to feel the shift in everyone’s attire. For people who live for fashion, it’s an excuse to show up exactly how you want, with no restrictions.

Despite how individualistic and unconventional many street style looks were, there were definitely overarching themes of elements people chose to include in their outfits. These were the top five street style trends I noticed during NYFW 2022.

Metallics were predicted to be one of the most sought-after shoe trends of 2022, so seeing a sea of silver shoes at NYFW wasn’t a surprise. But it gave me a little jolt of dopamine nonetheless. Cowboy boots, Mary Janes, loafers—I saw them all worn in a silver shade. They were the first thing that caught your eye, regardless of what the rest of the outfit entailed.

Beyond shoes, silver was used as an accent through bags, body chains, belts, and the like.

With the rise of Barbiecore this summer, it’s no surprise that NYFW street style heavily featured the saturated hue. From utilizing it as a pop of color with shoes and accessories to full-blown hot pink looks, I couldn’t glance around without noting that hot pink was everywhere. During a season that’s known for deep, moody hues, the color was a refreshing injection of fun that I’m looking forward to incorporating into my fall looks. (When you see me wearing my magenta blazer on repeat, don’t be surprised.)

If you think sequins are reserved for nights out and Harry Styles concerts, you’re deeply mistaken. NYFW street style had people dressed to the nines in sequins, sparkles, and glitter in all colors of the rainbow. When choosing a glitz-centric outfit, rather than pumping the breaks when things started to get intense, they pressed on the gas. More was absolutely more.

You know the sunglasses your dad would pick up for $3.99 at a gas station during a road trip? When it came to NYFW street style, they became high fashion. The sporty aesthetic took a step away from athleisure and a step toward athletic fashion. Track pants, Nike and Adidas logos, and jerseys transformed from workout wear into something brand new.

The white tank top has been rebranded from something you toss on to sleep to a fall wardrobe necessity, and it was apparent at NYFW. When creating the base to their outfit, many turned to a plain white tee or tank to serve as the background noise to the rest of their look. This allowed more statement pieces to do the talking—and contributed to a cool, relaxed vibe altogether.
